International by Design: Translation Built Into the Call

A great many of the conversations that matter most take place between people who do not fully share a language. A daughter in Manila and a father in Riyadh. A site manager in Warsaw and a supplier in Shenzhen. A patient and a pharmacist who trained in different countries. These calls happen millions of times a day, and the language gap is usually absorbed by whoever has the least power in the exchange: the worker, the newcomer, the person far from home. We built MPower Space on a simple premise. The network should carry that weight, not the caller.

A network built to cross borders

MPower Space is an international application, not a local one. It runs on infrastructure we operate ourselves, with servers in Germany, because a company that promises to connect people across borders should own the path the call travels. Between MPower users, everything is free, anywhere in the world: voice and video calls, messaging, photos, files, voice notes, live location, and stories that clear after twenty-four hours, with seen-by.

Your identity on the network is your verified phone number. It is how other people find you, and, once you confirm it with the carrier, it is the caller ID shown when you dial an ordinary phone. Calls and messages are encrypted in transit, and messages and stories are stored encrypted at rest. We are careful about this claim: it is strong transport and storage security, not end-to-end encryption, and we do not describe it as more than it is.

Translation on the line, not around it

The clearest expression of an international network is a call in which two people each speak their own language and still understand each other. MPower's live voice translation works across 57 languages, on the call itself. You speak a sentence; it is translated and spoken aloud to the other side in their language; the reply returns, spoken, in yours. There is a natural pause of a second or two while this happens, the honest cost of doing the work in real time rather than pretending it is instant.

We are deliberate about what this is. It is an aid to understanding between two people, not a certified interpretation service. It will not stand in for a sworn interpreter in a courtroom or at a contract signing, and we would not ask it to. What it does is remove the moment where a conversation would otherwise stop: where someone gives up, switches to a language they barely hold, or waits days for a person who can translate.

What changes for the people on the call

For a family split across countries, it means a grandparent and a grandchild who grew up in different languages can still speak directly. For a migrant worker, it means a call to a landlord, a clinic, or an employer is no longer an ordeal brokered through a friend. For a small business, it means a supplier three time zones away is reachable without hiring for languages you do not have in the room.

Reaching people who are not on MPower, meaning ordinary landlines and mobiles, is the one paid feature. Those calls are billed for each minute started, at rates that vary by destination, drawn from a prepaid balance held in US dollars and topped up in the app. Before you dial, the app shows whether a number is free or charged, and what your balance is; the real cost appears afterwards in your history.

Businesses can go further without buying hardware: internal extensions, a conference room, call forwarding to an outside number, and an answering menu whose greeting and options you write in plain text for an AI voice to read. The principle underneath is the same. The tools cross borders so the people using them do not have to.

Removing a language barrier does not make distance disappear, and we are wary of pretending it does. Time zones remain. Costs remain for the last mile onto the ordinary phone network. What changes is that fewer conversations end before they begin. That is the direction we are building in: a network where being understood does not depend on which languages you happened to be born into, and where speaking across a border is treated as the ordinary case, not the exception.
